Earlier this year, nearly 300 primary care doctors at Mass General Brigham voted overwhelmingly to unionize with Doctors Council SEIU. They did it to protect primary care, stop burnout, and make sure frontline doctors have a say in how care is delivered. But even after the National Labor Relations Board officially certified their union, MGB still refuses to bargain. Now, the doctors are taking their fight public. On Labor Day, Monday, September 1, they’ll hold an informational picket outside Mass General Hospital to demand respect for their union and accountability from one of the country’s most powerful health systems. This isn’t happening in a vacuum. MGB has laid off hundreds of staff, slashed core programs, and is now aiming to partner with CVS MinuteClinics without any real input from their own primary care physicians. While executives take home millions, MGB is cutting corners, and patients are paying the price. The fight has sparked a wave of support. Somerville, Boston, Chelsea, and Cambridge City Councils passed resolutions urging MGB to come to the table. Patients are sharing their stories about why they want their own PCP to be a union doctor. Nurses, resident physicians, elected officials, and patients will join the Labor Day picket in solidarity. Doctors’ working conditions are patients’ care conditions. And this movement is only getting stronger.
